Laloo's - The name itself is just fun to say! I was recently introduced (visually) to this amazing small ice cream business based in Sonoma County, CA via the Cooking Channel. They use goats milk instead of cows milk and apparently it makes a wonderful and healthy ice cream. Each pint is handcrafted and made the old-fashioned way. (They are part of the SlowFood movement - hurrah!) The flavors sound heavenly and I'm thinking it may be time to order some. I recognize I am pregnant and crave all sorts of things, but I've always had a sweet tooth and NEED this. NOW would be even better. So, I encourage you to look through their website and locate some too! That Strawberry Darling looks soooooo delicious :)

Craft Project: Baby Mobile

I've totally got that 'nesting' bug these days. Being just 1.5 months away from delivery day, I've got a boat load to do! I decided I should get crafty and make something for the future baby's room :) Hence, my baby mobile...

Overall, it cost me $18 to make, which was important as our budget is tight. I liked the idea of the picture mobile (you can change the images out and it can grow with the child). I also love owls and made the decision to create a subtle 'owl' theme in nursery. I googled 'free owl template' and found this one. I cropped it to the right size and traced the images onto some lovely papers. After an hour of tracing and cutting, I glued these bad boys together and laminated them for durability. I am quite fond of these little birds :) Let's hope the baby is just as enthralled! haha.

I know our first baby will be here come July and life will most likely speed up and she will keep my days busy. I am so looking forward to her arrival and this new chapter in my life. However, in the meantime, I want some direction.

I've been trying to figure out exactly what I should be doing with my life right now. I had my small business going last year, but had to take a bow when my pregnancy woes were just too much to handle. I hated that, for several reasons, and the long winter months didn't help AT ALL. And, honestly, I'm still dealing with many of those lingering emotions. I just feel stuck. I stepped foot in my studio space awhile ago, looked around at my creations and materials, and I just felt uninspired. This made me sad. Where to go now? What to do? These are the questions that drift back-and-forth in my head every single day.

I thought I was on a clear path: start up my small business, grow it slowly, all while focusing on the main goal: taking private lessons in furniture design and upholstery (this is the direction I want to take my business). I was able to earn enough money to make this a reality and I did - at least I tried. I had signed up for a fabulous 2 month course in 'old-world upholstery technique' over in Wales. The day after I had sent my payment I was overcome with sickness. Turns out I was pregnant. And, not just the usual nausea, but 24/7 vomiting with trips to the ER. I honestly felt like I was dying. After two weeks of this persistent sickness I withdrew from the class. It wouldn't have worked, as my pregnancy woes lasted for months.

I have been wrestling with anger (unable to focus on my creative passions) and joy (getting pregnant). It is an odd state to be in. I am left with the ever-present question 'what now'? I simply don't know. This will be remembered as a year of struggle and uncertainty. We all have them. Isn't that part of living? Looking back on my past hardships, I do recall that these struggles do eventually melt away and clarity is restored. This is what I am leaning on right now to get me through each week. I do have faith that God has a plan for me. And this baby is a huge part of His plan, for which I am blessed. Just wish I knew what I'm supposed to be doing in the meantime...

...this is the cutest shop for little ones. I was introduced to these adorable decals the other week on Bliss and I traced them to this shop in Portland.

However, now besides wanting these sweet designs for the nursery, I also want these adorable outfits! I think these are the sweetest girl outfits. A bit out of our price range, but I will dream...maybe one piece? I am loving the photography :)

I've already been blabbing this fun news to friends and family, so I figure it's time to post it! Yes, we are having a baby girl come July!! We were for SURE it was a boy - guess my gut instincts are off. She is healthy and moving like mad in there - a HUGE relief. So many things to get anxious about as a pregnant lady! I had no idea. It was so amazing to see her spinning and drinking fluid - like she knew we were watching :) Still thinking of names - it will be a surprise!

Hemingway's cats...

My cousins are on a road trip of sorts down in Florida - I am soooo jealous. They rented a convertible and drove down the coast to Key West (aka home of Mr. Hemingway). I believe this was one of the perks for driving so far south, besides the warmth, as one of them is a huge fan of the man (like myself). I sometimes find myself craving a Hemingway book - I think I was the only one in 9th grade that devoured 'Old Man and the Sea' - hahaha.

There is magic and mystery that surrounds his books and the man himself. He is just plain fascinating. And, Key West, FL was lucky enough to have him for part of his life. The house remains intact and open to the public - it's got southern charm. According to my cousin, the house houses over 60 cats! Several even have 6 toes. $30,000/year is set aside to provide for these pampered felines. They are loved. If I were a cat, this would be my heaven...ready for a trip, anyone?

...with some very big news! We are pregnant!! After a hiatus of three months it feels really great to be back. We are thrilled and blessed, even though it has been a very rocky road and quite trying at times (which is why I took a break from blogging and work). I am now 4 months along and starting to experience some better days. Still unable to go for those walks I dream of taking and cooking delicious meals, but I am taking it day-by-day and keeping busy with all my tv programs. pathetic, but true. I know WAY too much celebrity gossip!!

So, bear with me as I shake the rust off and attempt to get back into the swing of things. Thanks for your well wishes and patience...

Life stuff is a bit complicated at the moment, so I am taking a bit of a break from the blog world to focus on my health, work, and family. Sometimes we need to listen to our bodies and acknowledge that it is okay to take a bow. I will be back - maybe in a few weeks or after the holidays.

Revamp-It #2: Upcycle Old Door

I am back with a new addition to 'Revamp - It'! This week I made a great headboard from a gorgeous antique door found on the curb (love free!) Seriously, this door is in mint condition - the original door hardware still had oil in it - works like a charm. I knew I had to make something out of this piece and so I chose a headboard for our bedroom. The total cost = $3.00.

What you will need:

- Any old door
- Two 'L' braces with screws
- One wall anchor
- Hand-held circular saw (makes it go a lot faster)
- Straight edge
- Clamps
- Sandpaper
- Measuring Tape
- Pencil

How to get started:

1. Place old door on work table. If it needs to be cut down mark your cutting line(s).
2. Once the line has been established, place a straight edge along it and clamp it to the door. (Depending on what type of saw you use, you may need to make changes to your measurements in order to allow room for the saw's edge.)

3. Carefully cut along straight edge all the way through door.

4. If needed, lightly sand the cut edge.
5. At this point, you may want to stain or paint the part you just cut. I didn't :)
6. Clean off the door with damp cloth and take inside to where you will be installing the headboard.

Installation:

1. Measure where you want to hang the door on your wall (take into consideration the height of your bed and if you are utilizing wall studs)
2. Take metal 'L' braces and place them so they are under the door (the door will be resting on them) They should be spaced about 1.5 feet in each direction from the center line of the door for best stability.
3. Screw the 'L' braces into the wall. Drill screws into the underside of the door. (see photo below)

4. You may be able to drill a screw with a wall anchor through the keyhole of the door into the wall behind. If not, no worries. Just adds extra stability.

5. Once the bed is pushed back into place, you are finished! You should now have a beautiful, one-of-a-kind headboard!

I added some sconce lighting to the headboard (still trying to find the right shades) and it works so well for reading at night. Try adding some to yours - get creative!

If you're like me, you have a basket half-filled with hand-picked apples sitting in your house getting softer by the day. We love our apples so much that we usually pick too many for the two of us, thinking next year we will be disciplined and only pick a half bushel. ha.

Now I've been on the hunt for recipes to use up these apples and I must say - I've found a winner. Whole-Wheat Apple Muffins. They are the most delicious muffin I've had in a long time. (plus, they're healthier than most muffin recipes out there.) I thought today would be a good day to share this recipe with you since this would make any family happy to wake up to on a Saturday morning :) I wish I could call it my own, but I must give props to this lovely cooking blog I've been following. Enjoy...

Whole-Wheat Apple Muffins

2 cups (8 ounces) whole-wheat flour

1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 cup (1 stick, 4 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup organic cane sugar, divided
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 cup (8 ounces) buttermilk or yogurt (I prefer the yogurt)
2 large apples, peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped

1) Preheat the oven to 450°F. Grease and flour or line with paper muffin cups 14 muffin cups and set aside.

2) Mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon, and set aside. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and add 3/4 cup of the sweetener of choice. Beat until fluffy. Add the egg and mix well; stop once to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl. Mix in the buttermilk gently. (Hand mix with wooden spoon or else it will cause the mixture to curdle.) Stir in the dry ingredients and fold in the apple chunks. (The batter will get very thick, almost like a dough. This is right!)

3) Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups, sprinkling the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar on top. Bake for 10 minutes, turn the heat down to 400°F, and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Cool the muffins for 5 minutes in the tin, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Serve warm with butter.

Yield: 12-14 muffins

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween weekend! It was a tad bit chilly here in Chicago, so many of the cute kiddies who came to our door were sporting coats and winter hats. I always HATED that as a kid!! You look forward to wearing your costume and to then be covered by winter gear just doesn't seem fair. Oh the trials of childhood.

This year we went to a halloween party in the city - unlike previous years where we watched a movie. I went as the head of Marie Antoinette - I'm sure she is rolling in her grave - but, I thought it turned out pretty classy, so I don't feel too bad. My husband went as 'Mr. Balloon Hands' - you'd only get this if you've seen this YouTube video. (The language is less than stellar, so keep the kids out of the room). But, I highly recommend it for its comedic value. We had a great time socializing with various creatures, pirates, Marilyn Monroe, and Julia Child. At first I felt super self-conscious walking down the streets of Chicago with my costume, but once I saw the Mad Hatter walk by, it was all good ;)

I've been promising you some 'before' and 'after' photos of our house. At last, they are here! Our old hardwood floors had taken a harsh beating as we've been renovating the first floor over the past 1.5 years. With that said, it was a dream come true to finally get them professionally refinished (I've been dreaming about this for way way way too long). As much as I love having dusty, dirty socks it will be so nice to walk barefoot again :) So, I've put together a bit of a collage to show you just how much progress has been made! Did I mention I LOVE autumn?? I know many of us enjoy it for obvious reasons - the changing leaves, the crunch as you walk through them, that crisp earthy smell in the air, and getting cozy inside your cocoon-like homes :)

And, with this glorious change has come an even bigger change in our home! Those that know me or who have followed my blog know that we've been renovating our 1922 bungalow for a year-and-a-half now. It has been a painful, exciting process, but we are finally seeing the fruits of our labor. As of midnight we officially moved out our belongings on our first floor. You might be saying 'what?!' 'why??' Well, we've finally gotten to the point where our old wood floors can be sanded and refinished!! All the walls have been moved, patched, painted and the lovely crown molding is up. I should also give props to my man for doing an awesome job with electrical :) While we didn't exactly finish all the painting and casework (this will be finished post floors) we reached a place where we were finally able to move forward with this last piece of the puzzle. Once this is complete, we can 'officially' move into our house! I am sooooo ready to make it our home :)

Tick, Tock, Tick...

clocks. I can't live without them. I have to wear a watch on my wrist at all times or I feel lost in space and time. well, maybe not that severe, but close! There's something comforting (unless you are nearing a deadline) and reassuring to have a clock nearby. I know I've already shared my love for cuckoo clocks, but lately I've seen so many fabulous vintage inspired clocks in shops and catalogs this fall - here's my list of fav's!

But,

my favorite clock is this old beauty...

and it is MINE!

A 1939 Big Ben Westclox that works perfectly (don't you just love that ticking sound of an old clock?) I dig the heft and look of this clock. Granted, it does have that super annoying, pee-your-pants kind of alarm, but it is optional ;)

Old maps reborn...

I've been on this 'vintage map' kick for awhile now. Besides collecting them from our personal travels, I also love finding old books and atlases filled with great old historic maps. You may recall this small batch of framed vintage prints I put in my shop a few months ago (some are still available!)...

Now I am including these wonderful, vintage knobs to the shop...

These would look so great on an antique dresser or cabinet. The vintage colors are soft and muted. Perfect for adding a touch of sophistication to your home or office - or perhaps a nice little gift for that friend or family member who has the traveled the world or dreams to one day...

A catch-up...

And, two weeks have past since my last post. apologies. We have been fighting off some nasty colds at our household for what seems FOREVER!! And, it has sorta been a chaotic and eventful couple of weeks.

Household renovations are back underway - finally feel like we are over the hump! However, now is the 'clean-up' stage of wiping down ceilings, walls, floors, etc...as drywall dust and grime continue to hang on. damn dust. (Not the best environment for people with colds and sinus infections, hence our temporary move to my parents.)

I also participated in my dear friend's green festival a couple weekends ago - a very cool event with lots of great treats and music on hand. I sold all sorts of items from my shop as well as some new creations :) Thanks, Leanne!

Our annual apple-picking event was this past weekend - yum yum yum. The best cider apple donuts on the planet!! And, of course the apples...

Then it was on to see Jersey Boys in Chicago with my mom and dear friends! It was a birthday celebration of sorts (3 of us have autumn bdays) so we treated ourselves to a wonderful meal at Trattoria No. 10 and then onto Jersey Boys. The first half was really great - the audience was totally into it :) However, just before the second half was to begin, we were all asked to exit the building for emergency reasons. oh lord. We got outside and cops and crime scene tape were everywhere - but, nobody knew what the heck was happening!! Finally, it was determined that a couple boxes with disturbing notes were discovered in the alley behind the theater during intermission. A bomb threat. What is wrong with people??? Fortunately, nothing happened and we all got home safe. But, we were REALLY looking forward to Act 2. As the Four Seasons sang...'oh what a night'!

And, to wrap things up, Pete and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary yesterday. with colds and all. Went to one of our favorite restaurants, moved back home and went to sleep. One to remember!

Front Porch Viewing...

We finished our front porch back in June - and I promised LONG AGO to share with you the end result! I somehow lost my photos of the 'before' (its driving me crazy), but you can kinda see in the photo below the chaos from last year...(go ahead and ignore my frizzy hair.)

That was a sad porch. We never ever sat out there and were quite embarrassed when people would come to the front door! The walls were a putrid green, the grey carpeting was horrid, and the 70's tiled window sills were something to behold. Plus, it became the 'dumping' ground for our construction debris. That is, until recently.

We, along with family, transformed this eye sore into a place of relaxation. We installed engineered hardwood flooring, built new wood window sills, and painted over that hideous green to a calming grey with white trimming. We also installed craftsman inspired lighting which will one day (very soon) flank our new front door. Now it is a place where we eat, read, talk, and is a perfect oasis to watch the leaves change. Even when it gets chilly out, I'm planning on shutting the storm windows and hauling out my heater and blankets to keep my toes warm :) I'm still searching for a rug and some chandelier type lighting, but that will come in due time. Here is our new front porch...

Revamp-It...

This is a new type of post I will be doing throughout the year called 'Revamp-It'. I want to share with you some of my personal projects I've been working on around the house and provide some easy 'how-to' instructions :)

We all know that money is tight right now, so revamping common household wares and flea market finds makes so much more sense than buying something at full price (AND it typically is more unique and environmentally savvy.) So, put on those work gloves and roll up your sleeves - it's time to get revamping!

Revamp-It #1: Revamp Blah Filing Cabinet

We all have one sitting in our office, garage, or basement - that metal filing cabinet from the 80's or 90's. Mine has been quite useful over the years (I couldn't stay organized without it), but it was so boring and, well, ugly. With our newly renovated and designed office/library I wanted to update its look. And I wasn't about to spend $150+ bucks on a new cabinet when this one worked perfectly well. So, I did some research and experimented - here's what I came up with.

What you will need:

- filing cabinet
- drop cloth
- new drawer pulls
- spray paint and spray primer
- fine-grit sand paper
- damp cloth or towel
- small piece of press board or mdf
- drill with metal bit
- measuring tape
- pencil

How to get started:
1. Take your metal filing cabinet outdoors and place on cardboard or drop cloth - something that will protect your grass/walkway from paint.
2. Remove drawers and hardware
3. Select new hardware (pick something fun and unique - vintage is always a good choice).
4. Using a pencil, lightly mark where your new holes will need to be drilled on drawer front. Be sure everything is straight and lined up correctly!
5. Using the correct size metal drill bit, drill through both penciled marks (and press board - see below.)
6. To cover the old holes, I used a 1/2" thick piece of press board (you may need extra shims depending on how long your screws are) and placed it on the inside of the drawers, directly opposite of the new hardware. Be sure to drill the exact same hole measurements on press board as it will be utilizing the new holes & screws for attachment purposes. (see photos below)

7. Once you've got this figure out, be sure to remove all the new hardware and shims because you are ready to paint!

Painting:
1. Thoroughly clean the cabinet (especially the parts you will be painting) with warm water and mild soap and let dry.
2. Use a spray paint primer and apply one even coat. (Hold can at least 12" away from the object and slowly spray the paint in a back and forth motion. You don't want to let paint pool or streak!)
3. Let primer dry for several hours or as directed on paint can.
4. Once dry, lightly sand the cabinet as tiny bumps or streaks may have developed. Be sure to wipe down cabinet following a sand!
5.Use a quality spray paint meant for metal applications (color & sheen of your choice). Again, hold can at least 12" away and use same technique as given in #2.
6. I typically let dry overnight.
7. Repeat step #4 if necessary.
8. Apply a second or third coat, if needed. (I needed 3 as I was painting a black cabinet white.)
9. Don't forget to spray paint your press board that will be covering up your old holes!
10. Let dry completely - overnight is best.

Now for the fun part - putting it all back together!
1. wipe down cabinet with damp cloth and let dry.
2. Attach press board to inside of cabinets using new hardware screws.
3. Attach new, fun hardware - be sure to screw it tight as the press board will be attached on other side!
4. Place drawers back into the cabinet et voila!

Seems like there may be a lot of steps, but it really goes quite fast. Just be patient when spraying - you don't want a yucky paint job. Now you should have a fresh new take on a metal filing cabinet that nobody else will have :) Fill it back up with papers and you're off!

Factory 20...

I don't quite remember how I came across this gem of a furniture shop, but I can tell you I'm glad I did! Factory 20 is a purveyor of fabulous furniture (many of which are great industrial designs, which I am obsessed with right now.) I could go on about how much I am drawn to their stuff, but I think their pictures will do the job. The prices are a bit painful, but if you're looking for that particular piece, they probably have it! Enjoy...it's o.k. if you drool.

August Whirlwind...

I'm back home - seems like I've been gone for ages! Now I'm in the midst of sorting through mail and dirty laundry and trying to get back into the swing of things. While it does feel good to be back home, California still calls :)

We spent a week in Sonoma County visiting family and meeting my new nephew. I hate living so far away! We had a great time winery hopping, driving up and down Highway 1, walking along the beaches and in the redwood forests, and of course eating AMAZING food. My brother-in-law is a chef, so you can imagine why I gained 1.5 lbs.

It has been 24 years since I visited CA - I grew up in Fresno as a young child. I love the west coast - I feel like I'm home when I'm there. Our future vacations will be focused on visiting areas in WA, OR, and CA - we'd love to move out west in the next few years. We shall see...

I can't wait to catch up on my blog roll! Sorry for being so out of touch this past month. I am staying put for awhile now - being broke kinda dictates that:)

Wellingtons...

I think everyone should own at least one pair of wellies. They really are the perfect shoe for running out in the mud/rain/snow, walking the dog, and just looking darn cute. I am the proud owner of my authentic green wellies, purchased in Wales while working on a farm a couple years ago. (As you can see, it was VERY muddy.) They have continued to see lots of use - and I'm always keeping my eye out for another pair.

Well, I found my dream pair of wellies...

I think that chocolate brown color is gorgeous - and that striped detailing! Hunter is thee brand to buy for wellingtons, and you will pay a hefty price, but they will last you forever. There are many other brands out there - Kamik is another and a bit more reasonable. What kind of rain boots are you sporting?

While I do love these boots, I am crossing my fingers I won't need them next week in California :) I leave Saturday and won't return for another week! I am really looking forward to this trip. Can't wait to share stories and pictures!

from our travels throughout the south central states. It was lovely. Never really toured this region - only driving through on the way to CO or the Southwest. I love discovering more great places to see in this big and beautiful country.

Who knew Kansas City was so artsy & pretty?! I didn't, until we stayed a couple days there. And, Little Rock - so walkable and interesting. Memphis - beautiful, depressed, hot, and humbling. We had a great time exploring and sharing time with family. Now, back to reality...

...well, for a week that is!!! We head to CA on Saturday :) I feel so spoiled.

Curbside finds of a different color...

Yes, it is true. I have been collecting more and more from the curbside to refurbish. But, with the house and life still chaotic, all the pieces sit in the far, dark corner of the basement. so sad. ONE DAY THEY WILL BE RESURRECTED!

However, I would like to share with you a very, VERY, VEEERRRRYYYY interesting curbside find I made two nights ago out on a walk with my hubby and the dog. I passed by a very cool, retro side table (the pic above). I was very excited and enlisted the help of Pete's strong arms to carry it back to the house. Although as we lifted it, it weighed a TON. So, we opened the drawers. The top drawer - empty. The bottom drawer (which looks like a dummy panel) was filled with - oh yes - porno!!!! C'mon people! The best part was the vegetarian cookbook sitting next to the 'Mexico Gulp' dvd. Really?!?! Would it have been too hard to clean the drawers out before setting it out on the curb? I don't care what these people are into, but I'd rather not know. Now when I walk past their cute, 4-square house - this is ALL I think of. great.

Lesson - CLEAN OUT YOUR CURBSIDE DONATIONS! Or you may just become the talk of the neighborhood ;)

My dear friend, Leanne, sent me this fabulous resource called Vintage Printable. This lady has researched and collected hundreds of vintage drawings from sea life to you-name-it. And the best part - you can use it for your own projects for free! All the images on her site, with the exception of a few, date back to pre-copyright law. Since then I have found a few other similar sites that offer vintage images for free - check out Karen's Whimsy. I think I see future wall decor for my home :)

I just finished this project for my sister's baby boy (who should be arriving any moment now!) They live right near the beach in CA and daddy's a surfer, so it is only fitting she asked if I could come up with some 'sea' themed knobs for the baby's cottagey (is that a word?) white dressers. I kept it simple, black and white, and utilized the great vintage drawings from the above websites. I think they turned out really fun! I may just add some to the shop...

Steinbeck Fashion...

J.Crew has launched their newest addition to its clothing line - 'East of Eden'. I'm sure Mr. Steinbeck is having a good laugh right about now as many of his stories portray poverty, struggle, and strife - not exactly what you would draw upon for fashion inspiration. However, J.Crew actually did a pretty good job, all things considered.

They focused this clothing line more on the textures, colors, and details that Steinbeck injects into his work. All of which, revolve around my favorite color scheme - neutrals. There are plenty of grays, whites, creams, browns, and splashes of vintage rusts; just as you would find in the dirt, water, sky, tears, and blood of East of Eden. It is worn, and weathered - exactly what J.Crew achieved. Perhaps Steinbeck might feel at home in a pair of their jeans...

I love pressed flowers. I've loved them ever since I discovered some of my great-grandmother's in one of her old books I inherited as a little girl (photos above and below). I made it a point throughout my childhood and adulthood to collect flowers, leaves, etc...and tuck them away into both favorite & random books. Every now and again, I flip through some of these books, only to find myself excited when I come across some of these delicate histories of my youth. All the items collected have meaning and a special place attached to them. Some have remained in tact, others have broken into many pieces, but they remain beautiful to me. (I am still looking for a couple books with some known flowers and leaves I would love to find!) These are books and flowers that will be passed onto my future children, including great-grandma Bode's "The Pride of Jennico".

My goal was to visit at least one flea market a month - I am far, far behind as I just visited my first of the summer. I had a great time perusing all sorts of treasures, junk, and antiques at this well-known flea market and came away with some amazing goodies for my boutique. It was a perfect summer day, but I still sweat through my shirt as I awkwardly carried my purchases all over the place. (I really need one of those granny grocery carts!)

I salvaged as many of these great antique maps as I could. They are from a 1903 geography book that was tattered and falling apart. I had to do something with them - they are too beautiful and old to discard. So, I've decided to showcase them in these simple gallery frames with archival matting. I currently have all the continents and several of the US territories. I can see them displayed as a grouping or on their own in an office, studio, or library - perhaps one of your's??? I've just posted many of them to my boutique and more are on the way...

is this fabulous antique industrial 'nail holder'. I found this up in WI a few weeks ago at a great salvage shop. It was covered in dust and sitting on the ground, being neglected. I have been looking for an organizational tool for storing my small odds and ends for work. It seemed to fit all the criteria I was looking for! It weighs about 3 lbs. and the top portion turns like a lazy susan - it is perfect for my work station. I am happy it's mine :) We are getting along great...

well, perhaps it is a bit more than "slight". I've been having an inner struggle for the past 8 years with carbonated beverages :) (Just as I wrote that I felt incredibly pathetic, but I must face it full on.) It is true, I could drink two cans of coke a day. Fortunately, I stopped that after my senior year in college. (It was a necessary part of my diet to staying alert in studio & combating headaches). But, after graduation I felt it was time to set some boundaries. So, I have since been trying to do a "one coke" per week diet. yeah. it has been rough. I have failed numerous times, but it is nothing like the college days.

I know this stuff is horrible for you, it eats away at rust, and has like no nutritional benefits...so why do I struggle so? That darn bubbly taste!!! I've realized it is more so the carbonation that I love. So I have been drinking what the Italians call 'aqua con gas'. La Croix is a personal favorite. I was feeling great about it and myself, but I recently learned that carbonation can be bad for you too!? Apparently it can deplete your calcium levels?! argh. Have you heard this?

So, I feel 'stuck' when it comes to my beverage selection. I am finding it hard to give up carbonation. I know plain water is the best, but I need that zing sometimes! Do any of you struggle with this problem? I know it is so minor in the grand scheme of things, but with this hot summer weather I find myself wanting to reach for that icy cold coke, la croix, dr. pepper, perrier, barq's...

Any suggestions or input on this matter?

I really the dig this french style of craft. In simple terms, it is an imitation of wood grain typically made from mortar and cement. You can often find it in gardens as bird baths and 'fake' logs/rocks/toad stools, etc. Granted, if you have too much of it then I think it looks a bit odd, but in small doses it makes a pretty accent to any room. We are back from our travels to the north country. Even though the weather was more like autumn with wind and rain, we felt relaxed upon our return home. I think small getaways like these are the perfect medicine for decluttering the mind. We spent a long weekend in Door County with our great friends and did a little hiking, napping, and s'mores making :) And, a fish boil.

was busy!!! With family, work, and house projects, I had a very full month of activity. After the in-laws left, my very pregnant sister came into town from sunny CA for her baby shower and a final solo trip. I do enjoy spending time with her - not something I would have thought about 15 years ago, as we fought endlessly about trivial crap. If you have a sister, you know what I mean! I wish now we lived next door to one another. Wanna move back to the muggy midwest, sis?? haha

During all the visits, we also found some time to work on the house (as you may have read about in my previous posts), and even found our prize chair!! While I would describe my style as more rustic cottage, I can't pass up great piece of modern furniture. Yes, we bought a fabulous chocolate leather Barcelona chair & ottoman for a great deal via Craigslist. It fits perfectly in our study - I see many hours of napping & reading taking place in that chair.

To end this fun-filled month, I spent the afternoon with several wonderful women at Country Living's Women Entrepeneur Seminar at Navy Pier. It was such a blast meeting up with some of my blogging pals :) You know who you are!!! While this year's event wasn't as good as the previous, I still came away with new ideas and motivation...which I need.

Now onto June! We are going out of town tomorrow for a long weekend getaway with our dearest friends to Door County, WI. Although the weather is supposed to be chilly and damp, I am all too eager to get away and drink some wine by the fire with good friends :) S'mores will also be making an appearance.

The woven cotton rugs by Dash & Albert won me over last summer, when we purchased one up in New York on an outing. The color schemes and patterns are simple - they make me think of old farmhouse front porches, lemonade, and lazy days. We love the one we bought (it is currently in the washing machine) not only for its aesthetic charm, but for its durability. They say to hand wash, but who has time for that? They've done wonderfully in the washer :) Seriously, these things are meant for foot and dog traffic - I dare you to try one out.

I am narrowing down my selection for our front porch - here they are :) I can't wait - who knew a rug could make me so happy?? The little things, right?

Hello my friends and strangers! I do apologize for the long absence, but I must admit, it was kinda nice not being tied to the computer;) My husband's parents came to visit and were kind enough to help us with all sorts of house and yard work. Check out some of the photos below! If I could only harness the energy and productivity of 4 people....

I am so happy to see my sweet little veggies and flowers planted. I have been waiting for this day since January. The back deck is coming together and oh-so relaxing with our new 'used' adirondack chairs (recent Craigslist buy) and pots of flowers and herbs to gaze at. And, you might remember a very old post I wrote last year regarding our front porch?? Anyways, the hardwood floors have been installed and the windows washed - now I just need to paint away that hideous green. I will do another post about this project later.

May Day! This holiday has been celebrated for thousands of years and has taken on many different meanings to various people groups and countries. Most of us know it today as the international holiday of working people. But, I personally like this day because it signifies the transition into warmer, flower-filled days:)

I stepped outside this morning to get the mail, when I discovered the sweetest May basket on my doorknob:) Several of the local school children made these baskets for the neighborhood - I think this is the sweetest gesture! It made my day:) This is an old European tradition that I hope never dies. What a great thing to do with your kids!

My love of jute started back about 5 years ago, when I came across an old sofa chair. The thing was a mess - ripped fabric, busted support wires, stains galore - but one thing remained - the jute. It is typically used in upholstery for webbing support - and for good reason - but, now you see it everywhere! From fashion, accessories, homegoods...jute has made a name for itself, not just for its great strength and eco appeal, but for its simple, charming good looks. I think I may have to create something with it:) Have you?

While I try hard to incorporate eco-friendly and sustainable practices at home and in my life, Earth Day always makes me take a broader look at the world. I happened to catch a snippet of Oprah this morning - apparently there is a garbage swirl the size of TEXAS in the ocean!!! how nasty is that?! It makes my heart sad. These horrific examples of our ignorance charge me to make even more changes in my life.

One thing I am going to be more proactive on is: PICKING UP TRASH WHEN WALKING THE DOG! I am always amazed at how much junk gets tangled up in the prairie grasses at the parks and along the river front. I always forget to bring an extra bag along to collect these items. So, today I began this mission - and I must say the little piece of river front we go to is looking pretty darn good right now:) I hope to keep this up!

This room sums up my style in one fell swoop: simple, warm, light, clean, and lived-in. I love to mix vintage with new. I am drawn to different shades of white and grey. Comfy, feather-down seating is irresistible. In my mind, all these things create the perfect room for napping, reading, drinking tea, and gabbing with friends and family...all of which are oh-so important to me.

the time to get moving! If you're like me, it is the season that makes me want to take the reigns and be productive. Clean out the house, hang that first load of wet sheets out on the line, dig in the dirt, plan out a new system of organization within your life & home, and create. This last item is something that I've been lagging on - winter was pretty rough on my creative flow. So, I am excited to get back into the swing of things and shake off the winter blues.

are very important. Especially when life gets a bit icky. As some of you know, our family has been going through some rather difficult times with illness. While things are looking optimistic it is still too easy to fall into a stupor. So, I've decided to brainstorm what little things brighten up my hard days:) Here they are in no particular order:

1. A handwritten note or package in the mailbox
2. Beautiful flowers on my table
3. A hot lunch (dinner leftovers)
4. My walk with our pup, Isabella
5. My husband returning from a day's work
6. A creative/productive work day
7. Looking through my europe photos
8. A good clothes day

My Green Thumb...

Well, I'm working on it:) Spending so much time overseas and working on organic farms has inspired me to grow my own goodies. During that time, I realized that I love weeding. (I know I'm not the only one!) Then, I realized I really really love planting and caring for my beautiful seedlings.

So, I've started to plan my garden for the spring. I actually feel like I'm behind as the temps have already soared into the 60's and 70's! I've pulled out my trusty gardening books and with the assistance of my husband, we've agreed on what we are gonna grow and where. It is rather exciting:)

Experiments will be had - we collected a variety of heirloom seeds from Seed Savers - one is mini-cantaloupes! They're like 3" in diameter - super cute. We're attempting to build raised beds this year out of wood planks - I will send you all pics once they have been constructed and installed. It is going to be a busy and wonderful spring in our backyard...

So, March has already rounded the first week and I'm just getting back into the swing of things. My sister and her husband came for a nice long visit (much eating and more eating). The weather was the typical crappy Chicago winter while they were here, so we didn't get out to do much shopping or exploring. We did go bowling though - that's right...can we say '106'! They left for CA. I miss them.

My mom had her surgery this past week, too. We are very happy to report everything looks great so far! She will get the final results this week. Thanks for all the prayers and kind words:)

Now I sit here on the couch listening to my dog snore. I feel like I need some great and crafty post since it has been so long, but I am drawing a blank. Guess I'm having one of those days. No good to force it. So, I will sign off for today. I will be back. I promise.

My sister and her husband are coming into town today from sunny CA (crazies). She is pregnant and I can't wait to see her and her growing belly:) Not quite sure what we all have planned, but I know there will be a trip to Gino's East Pizzeria (her husband has NEVER had Chicago deep-dish!!) and Portillo's. Can you tell eating is a priority? haha So, I will be away for several days, but I promise to read all your blog updates when I return:) Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

My man is off to Boston for a training session this weekend - guess that means some 'girl' time for moi;) I've decided I need to watch my Bridget Jones's Diary for the 99th time, eat some mac n' cheese, have my big mug of hot chocolate with whipped cream, and flip thru those magazines I've been eyeing - I am getting excited! Plus, my Izzy will be right by my side. I will miss you, P, but I know you are all too fine not watching Bridget with me again;)

Meet Isabella...

This is our newest family member! She was adopted over the weekend (such a great Valentines Gift!) She is a mix - Great Pyrenese and Cardigan Corgi - making for a beautiful 2 yr. old pup:) Her life history thus far consists of living in a crate - poor girl. We worked with the Chicago Canine Rescue to get her - she was rescued from being put to sleep at a shelter in Kentucky. She is the sweetest and gentlest dog, although incredibley scared of EVERYTHING (except her crate). Time for some tlc and socialization. We are hopeful she will come out of her shell and finally live a happy life:)

As you can imagine, I haven't gotten much work done over the past few days. I just want to help her build up confidence! I managed to lure her outdoors today and walk around the yard - this is big. I think we all will rejoice when we don't have to carry Izzy to and from room to room. Anybody have experience working with dogs like her?? Any advice?? She will be going to the vet and hopefully an animal behaviorist soon.

I love having another soul in the house...

Slumpish...

I don't even know if 'slumpish' is a real word, but I feel like it. The past week has been a bit odd, sad, and changing. My mom found out that she has breast cancer - something we weren't expecting - although I guess you never do. Cancer has been all too close in my family as my younger sister had leukemia during highschool (which she won).

So, now we are struck with this 'cancer' word again. Fortunately, my mom's cancer was detected from her annual mammogram and it is in the early stages. She will have surgery in a few weeks and we will find out exactly what we're dealing with.

Oh, life.

I've been going back and forth between a 'surreal' state and an 'oh sh*t' state. These moments cause you to stop and think. How will this cancer affect my mom, dad, family, friends. How good are her surgeons? What does this mean for the future? I suppose you can beat yourself over the head trying to come up with every possible scenario, but in the end, it is about being in the present. Only God knows what will be.

I do know that I am calmed and strengthened by my mom's 'fighter' attitude. We will win this 'cancer' too and will be all the more thankful for life - again.

A Frank Lloyd Wright Farmhouse...

Another little treasure we found in Hampshire, IL is Wright's Muirhead Farmhouse. We had a bit of trouble actually locating this place as it is well hidden off the country road. I managed to catch a glimpse of a low lying building from a distance and had a hunch this could be it! We took the long drive up to the property, despite the 'private' signage, and sure enough - it was!

The owner of the property (son-in-law of original owners) was gracious and let us inside:) He and his wife recently had the farmhouse renovated (had the typical cracks and leaks associated with Wright's designs) and have now extended this little architectural gem as a Bed & Breakfast. How fun! They also offer a dinner/tour of the home and grounds for up to a party of 6 people. So, if you are looking for something fun and unique - check Muirhead out! I know we are:)

A Treasure in Hampshire...

Hampshire, IL that is:) My husband has been itching to get his hands on some reclaimed lumber to build our office desk. He scoured the area for companies that offer this kind of product - and he finally found one: Old Growth Trading Company. While this company is small, it does offer an infinite supply of lumber for any project you may have in mind. We weren't having any luck connecting with the owner, so we just decided to take a drive out to the country and see this place for ourselves.

Bob, the owner, was there by chance! So, we got a tour of the fabulous facilities and learned all sorts of nifty things. This place is a well-kept secret in the midst of sleepy town USA. Check out the photos! (Pardon the phone camera quality).

We are figuring out what type of woods we want to use for this office desk - there are so many to choose from! But, we've narrowed it down hopefully to Walnut or Oak. These reclaimed woods are gorgeous - mostly from dilapidated barns and homes (even an old wood ship from Nova Scotia!)

In addition to our little trip to Hampshire, we decided to check out Woodstock, IL (most famous for the filming of Groundhog Day and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles). The old town square is charming and has some wonderful shops and restaurants.

The Violet Hour...

Definitely one of thee coolest places I've been in Chicago - a worthwhile trip, for sure. The Violet Hour is this secretive, dark, and elegant underground bar in the Wicker Park neighborhood. I would have walked right past it if my friend hadn't stopped me! There is no signage for this sweet spot, just a simple handle protruding from what seems to be the wall.

As you enter, it is dark as there are no windows and the place is covered with deep-colored velvet drapes. Only dimly lit chandeliers and a couple roaring fires provide the perfect lighting for this intimate space. We went with some of our friends who had noticed on many occasion a line forming outside on the weekends. So glad they discovered it! We tried to capture the mood of this place on our cell phone - and I think it turned out quite well:) You may notice I have incorporated one of the photos for my new 'look'. I can't wait to go back.

A Book of Inspiration...

This book was given to me as a gift before I started my college career in Architecture (and perhaps it was slightly influencial as I switched to Interior Design during my 2nd year!) I recently found this book in one of our many book boxes (still unpacking!) and found myself drawn in by all the beautiful designs. This book is filled with fabulous female designers and a smattering of their best work. I still go to this book for inspiration and direction when I've found myself "stuck" in the design box. If you have an interest in this field or simply love looking at beautiful interiors and gardens you should definitely check it out.

One of my favorite designers featured in this book is Mariette Himes Gomez. She has been in the design world for many years and continues to create fresh interiors. The holidays are over...

I hope your new year has started off on a wonderful note! I can't believe we are already rounding off the first week! How did you celebrate? Have you penned in your goals?

I'm trying to be more diligent on getting things done. So far, I've signed up for a few aerobics classes (I'm carrying like 5 lbs. of cookies), finished up a couple big house projects (with husband's help), and I'm feeling a bit optimistic about 2009. The holidays were wonderful, but it is time to look forward.

Now if only the sun would stay up longer...

I hope everyone had a meaningful and peaceful holiday! I just returned home from WV and I am now trying to catch up on the past week. I had a nice time relaxing with my husband's family and driving through the hilly landscape:)

Now I am trying to get ready for the passing of 2008! We just pulled out our family goal book - I highly recommend starting one if you already haven't - and we perused the previous years' goals. I didn't do as well as I had hoped, but that is the beauty of starting a brand new year:) I am anxious to start listing my goals.

I had my show this past weekend at Architectural Artifacts in Chicago and it was a big success! The venue has so many great and unusual antiques (I had my table next to a 12'x 8' stone frieze face! Can't say that everyday:) Anyways, lots of people came out to support the show and I came away with sales and a lightened load - phew. It was a great show! Thanks to all those that made it out!

Deutschland Delights

Guten Tag! I want to share with you some of the very delightful images of Germany's many famous Christmas markets. Every town, big and small, has one and they each have their own distinct charm. I seem to dwell on our time in this country often, but for good reason. It is beautiful! The Germans knew what they were doing when they started this tradition. Despite the cold and dreary weather, everyone comes out to enjoy the holiday delights! Sit back and imagine yourself strolling through the bustling crowds of happy people, with a mug of gluhwein in one hand and a zimt und zucker (cinnamon & sugar) crepe in the other:)

I am always amazed at how quickly the turn around from Thanksgiving to Christmas is! It is sorta becoming tradition in our family to cut our tree the day after Thanksgiving - it is wonderful way to welcome the winter season. We go to this awesome tree farm out in the country and this year offered the perfect weather! We (or I should say my mom) found a tree that would fit perfectly into our small house:) It really is perfect. Tall and skinny - a nice douglas fir.

This weekend will be busy again with holiday fun. We are attending the Wheaton College Christmas concert (we've been going since I was 6) and then we are off to partake in Geneva's Christmas festival. Santa Lucia arrives Friday night wearing her crown of candles atop her head by a horse-drawn sleigh. The town offers holiday teas, freshly made candy canes, caroling, horse-drawn sleigh rides for free, etc...over the weekend:) Can't wait!

I will admit, they can be a tad bit gaudy and grotesque. However, I find them to be quite lovely and whimsical. My excitement never ceases when the hour changes and that cute little bird or flurry of townsfolk make their appearance. My husband rolls his eyes when I mention the possibility of buying one and displaying it in our home, but I will win this battle!

I could kick myself for not buying one when we were living in Germany - that would have been too easy;) So I've been making a list of clocks that I would love to have - and now I'd like one of each, please:) Go and take a peek at my 'wish list' - hope Santa gets the memo...hint hint!!!

Architectural Artifacts (et moi)...

If you live in the Chicago area, you may have heard of or have already been to the wonderful and fabulous Architectural Artifacts. This superb treasure trove of unusual and lovely artifacts (old-fashioned bra molds, gothic church lighting, a vintage alfa-romeo, etc...) is located in the eclectic neighborhood of Ravenswood. It is so worth the time and effort to take a field trip to this store - it is candy for eyes and imagination!

Another reason to check this place out is because they are having their Annual Holiday Show on December 14th. I feel quite lucky to be selected as one of the designers to showcase my wares! I will have all sorts of my repurposed goods, plus some new items! If you are interested, please refer to the invite below:) It will be great!!!

I've come across yet another fabulous textile company - Hable Construction. Their fabric line offers a variety of fresh and classy patterns AND their manufacturing processes are quite admirable:)

Their canvas and cotton/linen fabrics are printed by hand in an old New England factory, using the old-fashioned methods of printing. Their more formal and textural fabrics are woven on looms using a process that was developed from techniques invented in the early 19th century. I love this!!!

They also have a really fun on-line shop that offers all sorts of nifty housewares and decor. Check their work out - you will be impressed.

I came across this designer the other day - I have fallen in love with her work. She does amazing textile patterns and then creates these dreamy interiors. I absolutely love the lighting she designed for this staircase. I think I may need some of her fabric for future work on my furniture...n'est-ce pas?

I finally got to sit down today and catch up on all your blogs!! I don't know where last week went, but somehow it is already monday night. I've been quite busy with work - always good - and tackling more of the house. We actually moved into a real bedroom!!! It still has no door, but I must say how elated I am. And, I never knew how thrilled I would be to have a dresser again:) A whole drawer just for socks!!! yeehaw.

Anyways, I will be back soon with more writings. I am getting back into my groove...have a wonderful Tuesday.

A New Dawn...

This is really the first time in my lifetime that I've seen such patriotism and enthusiasm about being an American. How things can change so quickly! Spending last year overseas really made me think about our government and its leaders - (the Europeans were great at sparking such conversations!) I have to admit, I was really embarrassed for our country - for several reasons which I will not go into at this time - and I felt the urgency for change.

Last night was a glorious night for me and hopefully for many of you:) I've since watched President Obama's acceptance speech three times - each time just as inspiring - and I feel called to act and serve in ways that I've not felt before. I want to be a part of this movement. A movement where we, the people, are not only acknowledged and listened to, but encouraged to be the change.

Democracy has been reborn. Hallelujah!

I've been in a 'hunt and gather' mode for awhile now as we continue our house work. While walls still need to be demolished, I am already scrambling for ideas on how and what I will fill our rooms with. I love too many different styles - and I typically end up with a mix of them all. But, I am thinking after all is said and done, we'll want a home that is relaxing and well, relaxing:) I can't remember the last time I kicked up my poor feet! Thanks to all those who expressed their design opinions in my last blog entry!! It truly did help us make a decision:) While many of you favored the white wainscoting, you also shared your concerns regarding the room size, window height, etc...leading me to leave the walls "be". For now at least;)

We will go ahead with building a book shelf (painted white) that will take up the entire wall surrounding the french doors. As a compromise, we have plans to create a matching built-in book shelf in this corner (note the ugly paint picture below - can you picture this??)

This, in turn, will lighten things up while still creating that warm, cozy library feel. So, I guess Pete kinda won on this one - wow. Enjoy, Pete:)

However, I will get that wainscoting in one of our rooms...

Wainscoting - oui ou non???

We are having a bit of a design dilemma here at our wee household. My husband (the bridge engineer) and I (the interior & furnishings designer) sometimes have opposing views when it comes to decorating and designing. Typically, we are in sync with making such decisions, however, we are butting heads with our 'new' study/library room.

While Pete thinks the walls will look good plain (sans wainscoting/decorative trims) I think a tall, white wainscoting treatment would look fantastic in this space. We are painting the walls a very deep, dark blue color and the built-in bookshelves and ceiling will be white. He is concerned that adding this wall treatment will make the windows and shelving look out of scale. As he described, like someone who has his pants pulled up too high. haha. I on the otherhand, think it would brighten up the space while still creating a cozy study. Here are some photos of possible styles (ignore the paint colors)!

What do you think? We need some opinions here!!!

Ode to Beatrix...

I've always found a sort of magic and intrigue with the stories and characters of Miss Beatrix Potter. Even the life of Beatrix has always been of interest to me. Despite her misfortunes with romance and family life - she led a lovely, simple existence. The idea of living in the English countryside with the animals as friends seems quite nice, really.

While my reality doesn't afford me this opportunity, as of yet, I am forming bonds with a variety of our own critters. We have 'Tiddles' the chipmunk, 'Bernard' the bunny, and 'Squirrel' the squirrel. You may be laughing at me right now, but who hasn't felt the urge to give animals names?? Maybe just me, but I am okay with that;) hehehe.

Anyways, this morning brought out many of our wild ones, including Bernard who has decided to nest under one of our trees. He's been there for hours now. I like it. I managed to snap a photo of him - he seems to have warmed up to us. Isn't he the cutest? I find comfort in knowing I'll see these little creatures every day. I am finding a new appreciation for Beatrix's writings and drawings...

I am sitting at a local coffee shop right now enjoying my chai tea latte and gazing out at the chilly rain that is falling. I don't think I want to move from this cozy spot all day. We have some guys working on our house renovations right now and I had to get out to focus. Too many people trying to work in our wee house doesn't work very well:) I will gladly take this opportunity to get out!

So, as I suggested in my previous blogs, I will FINALLY address my tags! I've been trying to think up some new answers, as you've already read my other 'tags' and I don't want you to bore yourself while reading:) Time to learn more about me! Wheeeee!

FOUR THINGS I DID TODAY (Considering it is only 12:30...)

1. I quickly cleaned up the house before the carpenter guys arrived! They caught me without brushed wet hair and bare feet! dang.

2. Went for my weekly massage therapy appt. :) I love these days. I've got some wicked knots!!! I wonder if they'll ever go away???

3. Mailed off packages for some customers:) I LOVE these days too - the best part of the selling process! I also sent a box of Oreo cookies to my cousin in Germany (fyi - it is way too expensive.)

4. Decided to wear my sporty kicks today - they have been neglected for way too long. It is a comfy kinda day:)

FOUR THINGS ON MY TO-DO LIST (only four????)

1. Finish our phase I of house renovations!!!! (at least get one bedroom done so we can stop sleeping in the living room).

2. Rake the leaves and plant tulip bulbs

My Big Weekend...Part Two

I am finally getting around to sharing the second half of my wonderful weekend with you! Since I was 6 years old, my family has made it a tradition to go apple-picking at the most wonderful of apple orchards - Edward's Apple Orchard:) I've gotta say, it is one of my favorite annual trips (I've only missed 3 years!) and I hope to continue it with my family as long as we are able. Pete has married into this apple-frenzy family with just as much excitement as moi:)

Starting off with a ride on the tractor pull, we head to our rows of Golden Delicious and Empire. Once we've filled our baskets (usually too high) we head back on the wagon and get our share of the world's best apple cider donuts. Seriously, this treat is worth the mouth burns as you just can't wait for them to cool down! That fresh.

We were heart-broken when a tornado ripped through Edward's this past January in a freak storm. But, with hundreds of helping hands and loyal customers they were able to re-open this September. Miraculously, the tornado left the orchards untouched! Not quite the same story for the barns and homes.

It is just so nice to get out to the country and enjoy the sights and smells of autumn. I'm glad there are wonderful places like these for everyone to share...

Today is a very special day for me and my Pete - we are celebrating our fourth anniversary - giddyup! I just can't believe how much we've crammed into that short amount time (traveled through Europe for 8 months, made a handful of job changes, a couple moves, bought our first home, and currently renovating our first home, I could keep going...)! It has been an awesome 4 years, my dear:) May we have many many more.

Hello all. I've been in a reminiscent kinda mood lately. Perhaps it is the crisp autumn air settling in that makes me want to hibernate or the fact that our house is still a construction war zone and I've nowhere to cozy up. Whatever the reasons, I've found myself looking back on our last year in Europe. I like to find where we were and what we were doing this time last year. As I read through our journal and flipped through the photos, I've realized, I do wish I was there!!! Can you blame me??? Life on the Swiss Alps is hard work, but so worth it. Now, if I could only 'blink' myself there...

Now its back to work! I've got lots to do...

Lola B's One Year Anniversary!!!

I wrote about Lola B's boutique way back when for one of my "scouts". I absolutely LOVE her shop!! If you recall, her boutique is filled to the brim with pretty things for the home - not to mention great stuff for yourself:) She is coming up on her one-year anniversary and is throwing a lovely soiree to celebrate this momentous occasion! Among the fun, she has invited a few of us 'etsy' girls to participate in her trunk show. I am thrilled to be a part of this! Baptisms galore...

We attended two different baptisms this past weekend. One as guests, the other as sponsers:) I haven't been to a baptism for over a year, so this was quite unusual to have two in one weekend!

The first was for our dear friends in Chicago - it was a beautiful Catholic baptism and very intimate and personal. Cata did great - pretty much slept through it all!

It was held in Saint Mary of the Angels Church which is a gorgeous landmark that I've always wanted to see. I felt like I was back visiting the great cathedrals of Europe.

The second was for my brother and sister-in-law's daughter. They flew in from Seattle to have her baptized at their childhood church - which is where Pete and I still attend. It was a busy day for baptisms! Three to be exact! Natalie did great - pretty much slept through her's as well:) We are so honored to be her sponsers. She is a beautiful girl.

I think that should take care of the baptisms for the next year! Although more and more of my friends are pregnant....

Where to begin...

I just finished reading all my "daily" blogs - I feel liked I've been away forever!!! I enjoyed catching up on everyone's blogs and getting glimpses into your wonderful worlds:) It was a much needed break from my stressful and disorganized world as of late. It is getting better though and I am starting to see the light at the end of a very loooonngggg tunnel.

Pete and I spent all of last week renovating our home - and dealing with the remnants of last weeks flood waters. yuck. I was not alone in this - sounds like many of you also had your share of flooding! Last night we stayed up late trying to make sense out of our house situation and created an interim office and work space for me in the kitchen:) I can't tell you how much this has lifted my spirits! I feel like I have some ounce of control over my business and life again. Today I have been sorting through paperwork and receipts and getting things filed away. phew!

As for the house, we did get a lot accomplished. We framed out three new rooms! Check out the messy work areas:) We hope to start dry walling in the next week and getting the electrical work underway. I mentioned our front porch eons ago and how I hoped to get that finished - ha ha ha. That will be some time, as well.

So, that is my update. I can now focus on my business and get things prepared for my next trunk show on October 4th! More details to come...

So. Things have majorly changed course over the past few days. I never got to Leanne's event to sell (sniff sniff) because I noticed that morning right before leaving that our basement was flooding (sniff sniff). If you live in the Midwest you will understand how bad the rain was!!! Here in Geneva, we got over 9 inches of rain within 48 hours. DANG GINA!!!!! Seriously - it was bad. So, after ripping out all of our carpeting in the downstairs and emptying thousands of gallons of water, we wait for the insurance folks to do their inspection. Meanwhile, all of our boxes and items that filled our basement are now in our "construction zone" area. WE ARE OUT OF SPACE AND SANITY. Fortunately, we had lots of wonderful helping hands to get us through this disaster. THANK YOU!!!

Now we are trying to ignore what lies beneath us and focus on finishing our renovations upstairs so we can start putting things away. I tell you - this is NOT how we thought this would go. But, I suppose it could always be worse...this is what we are telling ourselves. So, I apologize for my absence - it will continue through the week as we work like maniacs on our home. I will be back and I look forward to seeing what everyone else has been up to!!! Hopefully you all escaped this terrible weather. Wish me luck.

Hello my friends. I have been missing the past few days. Pete is finally on a "vacation" at home which means house projects are again underway. And, I am prepping for a show tomorrow, the Green Festival to be exact! My dear friend, Leanne, is the coordinator for this event and it sounds like she got a good mix of vendors:) Hopefully the people will venture out into the rain - she has put so much of her time and effort into this!!! If you are in Chicago you should swing on by. I will be back to my usual posts next week - hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Especially those of you who are working at the wonderful Country Living Fair!!!

My 28th year has past...

I celebrated my birthday this past Saturday. It was nice. I decided not to do anything extravagant or exciting this year, but rather I wanted to just be home with Pete and put up walls in our house. Kinda anti-climactic, but I had a good time:) We did take a nice long walk around town and ate breakfast at the cutest "Parisian" inspired patisserie. If I could, I would send you all their almond croissants - you would understand my love for this place. Afterward, we headed back and began tackling the unending house work. We did make lots of head way and that feels great. After a long day of construction and dust, we cleaned up and had dinner at Isabella's restaurant. It continues to win Chicago's best mediteranean food - and it is in our backyard! It was quite the dinner.

So, my 29th year started with wonderful foods, great company, and productivity. What else could you want from a birthday? (alright - perhaps a day at the spa, shopping, a trip, etc...) hehehe

"Scout" Thursday

This time around I'm taking you all the way to Parkersburg, West Virginia. I know it isn't a popular vacationing spot, but if for some reason you do make it to this area you MUST stop in at the Trans Allegheny Book store!!! This book shop has tons of character and coziness all wrapped up in a super cool historic library. Apparently, it is even haunted - they keep that room closed up...bummer. I've been here a few times now and I've always spent hours drooling over the vintage books and art. (that drooling part is an embellishment).

There's this gorgeous spiral staircase that leads you to four different levels which houses all types of books and literature. You may even spot one of the many cats that live here curled up on a book shelf or chair. The floors are made from glass - super cool. By the time I'm ready to leave, I usually have 20 books in hand. Many of them have been transformed into my vintage book journals.

I just can't say enough about this place - I simply adore it. It makes me feel like I've stepped into another time and place.

It is here! The days of summer are coming to an end (even though it is like 93 degrees here today) and the nights are getting longer. I absolutely love this month - so much change in the air. Labor Day is like the last hurrah of the summer vacations and I hope you all had a chance to relax and enjoy it. I did! My husband and I ventured eastward to West Virginia (Pete's home state) for his 10 year high school reunion. Yes, he was the president of his class and now is stuck planning these events! hahaha. Overall, it was a good time. Of course there were the few wacko drunks to make the night colorful, but all-in-all it was fun meeting many of Pete's classmates and learning all sorts of great stories:) And seeing the classic photos of him sporting a bowl cut, huge wire-rimmed glasses, and a mustache...yes, it is true. He's gonna kill me for sharing that.

Speaking of taking a walk down memory lane, we also sorted through his childhood keepsakes, report cards, tests, art work, papers, etc...in his parent's garage and attic. As hot and tiring as it was, we all had a good laugh at Pete's amateur art projects and stories from the elementary years:) That stuff is priceless. We even found some of Pete's prized antlers from a long ago hunting trip. ( Don't worry - we took them off for the drive home.)

Another nice part of the trip was going over to Blennerhassett Island with Pete's family. We took an old sternwheeler over to this island which used to house native Indians, wealthy Irish immigrants, and even Aaron Burr's militia. It's now a living museum with lots to see and do. Hey, even the Amish made a trip over!

So, I feel like my summer is now coming to an end. Our focus is now on gathering bulbs to plant for the spring, raking the early falling leaves, and sipping our favorite teas. I'm ready for this.

STORAGE. storage. storage. I am without such storage as we have gutted our home. Things stand still at the moment - husband has been bogged down with deadlines and I can't really move walls on my own. Old Books+Recycled Paper+Binding Machine = Vintage Journals

I've FINALLY gotten around to making my vintage book journals. I made mention of this creation back in March - and as you can see it is now mid-August! oops! I bought the wrong sized binding machine - a slightly expensive mistake. but, I've remedied this problem and am now cranking out these journals! Yay:) So, I ask you to check out my new creations and let me know what you think! I've hand cut each and every piece of paper - I like doing things the old-fashioned way. Others may say I could save several hours a year if I'd just buy a great paper cutter! Quite true, but for now I am content with this method...it's actually a very soothing task.
